9 Genius Hacks To Increase Space Without Moving Home

“Greg “Home

If you have a little one on the way or your children are starting to get bigger, you will naturally begin to think about the amount of space in your home and likely you will need more room for your little ones to grow and thrive.

One of the main concerns when having baby is the additional space required. You know you are going to need to find a place for the baby to sleep, somewhere to store the pram, baby bath, bouncy chair, new clothes and all the other new bits you will have acquired.

For tots that are starting to grow, they will need larger sleeping space, drawers and cupboards, and more room to store all their toys.

Here we suggest some simple ways to maximise your existing space and create extra room for your family.

  1. Built-in furniture – whilst not the cheapest option, can be fantastic for maximising space and storage.
  1. Bunk beds – If you have more than one child and they share a room, bunk beds are a great way to add additional space.
  1. Under bed drawers – if there is space under your child’s bed, add some drawers which can be used to store clothes, sheets and toys. Also consider using the space under the cot as there is usually room to store items.
  1. Add a divider in the room – If your children are getting older but sharing a room, then you might want to think about their privacy. Adding a divider in the room will give them a sense of their own space which is important for a child as s/he grows up.
  1. Organise, organise, organise – the likelihood is that when you have your baby you will receive gifts of clothes of different ages: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months etcBigger clothes should be tightly packed together, clearly labelled, and then put out of the way but somewhere you will remember themAs the baby grows you can unpack them and pack/give away the smaller clothes.

Perhaps no matter how much you declutter or maximise the space you have, it’s still simply not enough. Are there other options available rather than moving to a new house?

Moving home is expensive! With the uncertainty of Brexit looming, and the cost of stamp duty and legal fees alone running into the tens of thousands of pounds, many families worry about how they can afford to get the additional space they need for their growing family.

Below are some options that could not only give you the additional space that you need but also give you a large return on your investment. Have you ever considered having a loft conversion or a home extension? Whilst the initial outlay might seem like a lot of money, the return on investment means you will be actually banking money for the future.

  1. Loft Conversion

If you have an attic that has not been converted, this could be a perfect opportunity to add a master en-suite bedroom, a playroom, or even two additional bedrooms for the kids.

  1. Home Extension

A home extension can be a great opportunity to open up the downstairs space and have a large open plan kitchen/diner or to add an additional room and a utility room.

  1. Basement Conversion

If you have an unused basement, then take the opportunity to convert it into extra space. This could be the perfect guest room for when friends and family visit, or an ideal spot for your teenager to have his/her own room and the privacy they really want.

  1. Garage conversion

As cars have become much bigger, garages are being used less and less, and these days tend to be used as a dumping ground for excess items. Why not take the opportunity to have your garage converted into an extra room?

As we have discussed, there are many ways you can add additional space to your home for your growing family. If you declutter as much as possible, and try and prepare in advance before your new born arrives, you can really enjoy expanding the space for your growing household.
